I recently put the Nitro Custom Squid through its paces while out with Victorian fisheries as part of their current squid studies program. We had the goal of catching 50 squid as part of the special quota and managed to get around 70 between three of us. The Nitro was the rod I used all day and easily accounted for 30 of the squid. It was a long day fishing for squid and the Nitro made hundreds of casts and was very comfortable to fish with under what you could call extreme use. The Custom Squid is a 7’ 6” rod rated to fish squid jigs from 1.8-4.0. It has a very fast action with a soft tip that combined with its length offers excellent casting distance. The Fuji Alconite Low Rider guides allowed me to cast all day and not get any wind knots. I cast a range of jigs from 2.5 through to 3.5 and fished depths from 2-10 metres. The Custom Squid performed beautifully with the varying jig weights and had more than enough power to aggressively retrieve the heavier jigs. The fast action provided excellent hook sets and the sensitive blank allowed me to remain in good contact with my jig at all times. The rod has enough power to tangle with large squid and you’ll never feel underdone and can easily impart an aggressive action on heavy jigs in the depths with heavy drag settings. The Fuji hooded reel seat and EVA double handed butt are comfortable, ergonomic and stylish. This is a great all round rod that lends itself to fishing baited squid jags under floats as well. With Nitro’s durable build quality and their excellent warranty program this a hard one to look past if you’re in the market for a dedicated squid rod.
