The Nitro Tuna Winch is a 24kg, five foot seven inch one piece stand up short stroker. Built from Class-A high impact defence grade Japanese graphite, it is beautifully presented in jet black with black bindings, black Aftco rollers a Hypalon butt and Hypalon foregrip. It has an extra wide roller tip which will easily allow for heavy wind on leaders to pass through without restriction and heavy duty Aftco roller guides which feature Aflon performance bearings that provide smooth operation while under great stress. What is distinctly different about the tuna winch is the extra long fore grip with finger grips. This fits the hand nicely and provides a solid hold on the rod. The Tuna Winch has a medium to fast taper and although designed to be a tuna rod its just as much at home fighting marlin. We were lucky to receive our Tuna Winch just in time for the awesome bite of Port Stephens that occurred in early February and were able to put this rod to test on some great striped marlin. The rod has a great load point that allowed us to easily set the circle hooks on some very excited marlin. What I particularly like is the extra long fore grip that allows a great hold of the rod meaning the rush to be harnessed up is not as critical. When in a gimbal the finger grips give a secure hold and coupled up with a 50 wide Tiagra you don’t feel the rod twist as much as other similar 24kg rods. The top of the fore grip is flattened and aids in applying additional pressure by clamping the line between your thumb and the Hypalon while still holding your left arm at full extension. The stiff action of this rod is ideal for towing lures straight from the rod tip and won’t bounce excessively with the weight of heavy lures, aiding you to keep the swim cycle of your lures as intended.
