Shimano Sustain FK Review

The Shimano Sustain has always been a great reel and one I’ve had a lot of experience with across multiple generations. I’ve owned several over the years and still regularly use the previous FJ models. These reels have seen heavy use — the 5000 as a snapper reel and the 3000 primarily as an egi reel — and they’ve handled everything thrown at them including saltwater, fish slime and squid ink. Both are still going strong with nothing more than basic self-servicing.

For this test of the new Sustain FK, I opted for the C3000XD, as it’s such a versatile size. It allows you to run a wide range of line classes and target multiple species, which makes it ideal for proper testing. I focused on dusky flathead fishing but, as expected, encountered a mix of estuary species along the way.

Shimano’s Infinity Loop system offers slow oscillation which provides exceptional line management.

UPGRADES

There have been some significant upgrades from the FJ to the new FK, with Infinity Loop being the standout. We first reviewed this in the Twin Power FE and it’s a genuinely impressive system. The spool oscillates slower, resulting in much tighter and more even line lay. This improves casting distance and allows line to peel off the spool more cleanly under load, which also benefits drag performance.

The Sustain features three different materials for the build with a CI4+ rotor, plastic body and an alloy side plate assembly. It keeps it light and durable.

LINE MANAGEMENT

Another key feature is the Anti-Twist Fin, which we first saw on the Stradic FM. It’s a small but effective addition that helps control slack line around the line roller, reducing the chances of wind knots. Combined with Infinity Loop, the overall line management is outstanding. From a consumer’s point of view it can be overwhelming when you see bunch of names for concepts and technology such as Infinity Loop and Infinty Drive, however, these do have real on water benefits. The combination of the Anti-Twist Fin and the slow oscillation of the Infinity Loop meant that I didn’t experience any wind knots over days of testing and line management was outstanding. This was further evident in the techniques I was using where I’m often casting with wind and retrieving slack line while jerkbaiting and working plastics and topwater lures.

DRAG

I exclusively used the Sustain for flathead and egi, pairing it with Shimano’s new Staaten and Instage rods. It handled everything comfortably, including multiple flathead with the largest reaching 72cm, along with quality tailor up to 76cm. The drag has been upgraded, now featuring Shimano’s Dura Cross system, trickled down from the Stella FK. It uses a revised washer construction that in real world use does significantly improve smoothness under load while still maintaining excellent durability. While we haven’t used the Sustain long enough to test that durability, we have been using Dura Cross on the Stradic FM and the Vanford FA for a few years now and it has held up very well.

Multiple large tailor put the drag to the test and it proved to be smooth and sturdy under pressure.

The drag is smooth throughout with no stutter, and there was no noticeable flex through the MagnumLite rotor under load. The drag is supported by a rigid plastic main body and a CI4+ side plate and reel stem assembly that keeps weight down while still offering more than enough strength for typical inshore work. I never felt like I needed more rigidity in these scenarios. Infinity Drive, paired with MicroModule II gearing, provides excellent torque for a high gear ratio reel, maintaining power under load where some fast reels can fall short. We have tested the Micro Module II gearing extensively over many years now on other reels and its exceptional- smooth, reliable under load and last years under excessive pressure from labour intensive techniques such as egi, micro jigging and jerkbaiting.

We love the ergonomic design of the drag knob, its large and easy to adjust during a fight.

LURE CONTROL

The Sustain sits within Shimano’s MagnumLite series, designed for low start-up inertia and precise lure control. Whether working jerkbaits, plastics, bent minnows or small swimbaits, the reel always felt ultra responsive and provided excellent lure control.

Overall, the Sustain FK strikes a really nice balance — light, responsive and refined, yet still capable when pushed. Unless you’re consistently fishing heavy drag situations like big (and I mean big) snapper on shallow reefs, barra in timber or large mulloway in heavy structure, there’s little need to step up to the Twin Power XD which is the Sustains successor.

Jerkbaits and bent minnows were the main lures used through the test and the Ci4+ MagnumLite rotor makes working these styles of lures a breeze.

The only thing I didn’t like about the Sustain is the T- Bar handle, I would have preferred a round EVA knob which you do get on the 4000. While the T-Bar does provide better sensitivity from the rod to your hand, it’s not as comfortable for techniques such as jerkbaiting where I’d sacrifice a bit of sensitivity for a better grip.

VERDICT

A refined and highly reliable inshore reel that now benefits from technology once reserved for Shimano’s premium range. Infinity Loop and improved line management genuinely lift performance, while the lightweight MagnumLite rotor provides full lure control. For the vast majority of inshore applications, it delivers exactly what you need without the premium price tag.

It makes for an excellnet egi reel- fast enough to work jigs agressivley and light enough for all day use.
